We arrived yesterday afternoon around 4:30pm in Bethesda, Maryland at the house of my brother Tom and sister-in-law Linda. Linda is a fourth grade teacher, and we had a great conversation about Colonial Maryland and the role the state played in the Underground Railroad. Both Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass were slaves in Maryland.
The Gettysburg experience was powerful, even in the dead of winter. the visitor's center and museum was transformative on many levels, especially the Cyclorama show. i highly recommend it to anyone.
We had lunch at place called the Dobbin House Tavern that was also the first stop on the Underground Railroad north of the Mason-Dixon line. The restaurant was in the basement. The slaves hid in a secret compartment built between the crawl space of the first and second floors of the home.
On Monday we will tour DC and celebrate MLK Day with our family. I have two brothers, two cousins, and close family friends who live here. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to make this trip.
wow mr. joe awesome site. I really thought it was cool that you went to the rock and roll hall of fame. Did you know the parking lot next to the hall of fame is where we parked at christmas time. I was born in Cleveland. Cool pictures of your kids. Can't wait to hear about the inaguration.
